While hackers like the Anonymous team vowed to enter the digital fight against ISIS, President Barack Obama is now asking other digital mediums to enter the fight. The president is seeking help from social media companies like Facebook in order to help end the threat of ISIS.

“I will urge high-tech and law enforcement leaders to make it harder for terrorists to use technology to escape from justice,” the US president said in a televised speech Sunday night, outlining his strategy to defeat ISIS, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria also known as ISIL or IS, according to CNET. 

Social networks are already working to help the government, however, this new call to action is asking for heightened help when it comes to intel and narrowing down on terrorist organizations and radicalized groups.

“US and UK authorities have also called for tech companies to weaken encryption so that it can’t be ‘utilized in a way that allows for a space, a dark space, for terrorist groups to be plotting operations and attacks,’ the White House official told Reuters,” according to CNET.

“Industry leaders and privacy advocates have responded with vehement opposition to the idea of weakened encryption.”

The fear from these industries is that weakening encryption on these services provide a disservice to the users and leave them vulnerable to hacks.

“According to Reuters, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have taken down more extremist propaganda in the past year than in all previous years,” said CNET in the article.

It’s quite a tough situation that calls for a serious meeting between the heads of these companies. It will be interesting to see how these social media companies handle the request and what it will mean for regular, law abiding users.
